Is it legal for companies to charge female employees more for health insurance than male employees?

I just found out that I’m paying almost twice what a male co-worker is for our HMO (at a small business).
We are both single, within 5 years of each other age wise and we have identical coverage. His thoughts were that they charge more for females because of the possibility of pregnancy. That smacks of discrimination to me, but I can’t confirm that.
